This month marks an important awareness campaign. Oral Cancer Awareness Month reminds us all that this disease is a serious problem and early detection is critical. According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, 48,250 people in the US will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year, which is about 132 newly diagnosed individuals each day. The Oral Cancer Foundation says this disease leads to the death of one person every hour, every day. These statistics apply to cancer that occurs in the mouth and the back of the mouth (oropharynx), as well as the outside of the lips. If you were to include laryngeal throat cancer statistics, then the rates of new diagnoses and death would be much higher.
At NYC Smile Design, our team would like to take this opportunity to encourage you to get screened for oral cancer. When you visit our experienced dentists for your routine dental checkup and preventive care, they will perform a screening to check for signs of cancer in the mouth and neck. Oral cancer has an 80-90 percent survival rate when detected early. Most oral cancers today are detected in late stages, which is why the disease currently has a high death rate of about 43 percent 5 years after diagnosis.
