Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to major health concerns such as cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease multiple sclerosis and yes, tooth decay. Recently it has been shown that Vitamin D activates your immune system. If Vitamin D is lacking in your blood your “killer” cells won’t be able to fight off disease causing pathogens. Unfortunately cavities and gum disease are not regarded as serious diseases. However, cavities and gum disease are associated with serious chronic health problems. A study from University of Helsinki in Finland showed that people with poor oral health lead shorter lives.
Now there is strong evidence that there is a relationship between Vitamin D deficiency and cavities. Modest exposure to sunshine in the middle of the day will give adequate amounts of Vitamin D. Unfortunately that is not possible for people living in colder climates or for people living busy lives and no chance to be outside during the day. Therefore taking adequate amount of Vitamin D supplement is an absolute necessity. We believe at NYC Smile Design good dental care and proper nutrients and healthy diet will dramatically reduce cavities and gum disease. The time has come to do so.
