Rethink Your Rinse: The Truth About Mouthwashes and Safer Alternatives

March 25th, 2025 | 2 min read

By NYC Smile Design

Do we really need mouth rinses? This is a common question among our patients. Many also ask what the best mouth rinse is. The real question, however, is why we even need mouth rinses and what makes a good one.

In today’s market, many commercially available over-the-counter mouth rinses contain ingredients that may not be ideal for your oral health. Let’s take a closer look at some of these ingredients:

  1. Alcohol
    • Many mouth rinses contain alcohol, often as much as 44 proof. While it’s included to kill bacteria, it doesn’t discriminate between good and bad bacteria. Over time, this can disrupt the balance of oral microbiota and allow harmful bacteria to proliferate. Additionally, alcohol dries out the mucosa, which can lead to chronic irritation. Studies suggest heavy, long-term use of alcohol-based rinses may increase the risk of oral cancer.
  2. Poloxamer 407
    • This petroleum-based detergent helps keep oily ingredients in solution. While not inherently harmful, it’s worth questioning whether such synthetic compounds are necessary in your mouth rinse.
  3. FD&C Green No. 3
    • This food dye is banned in the European Union due to its potential tumorigenic effects in experimental animals. It’s primarily a cosmetic addition with no health benefit.
  4. Thymol
    • Derived from thyme or oregano, thymol has antibacterial properties. However, its effectiveness is debated, and caution is advised, especially for pregnant or breastfeeding women and children, as no safe levels have been established.
  5. Methyl Salicylate
    • Similar to aspirin, this compound can relieve minor pain. However, in high doses, such as those found in some deep-heating creams, it can cause serious side effects, including seizures and breathing difficulties in children.
  6. Sorbitol
    • A sugar substitute used in many products, sorbitol can aggravate irritable bowel syndrome and cause gastrointestinal discomfort if ingested in large amounts.

Natural Alternatives for Healthier Choices

Given the concerns with many commercial mouth rinses, it’s worth exploring alternatives that prioritize your health. At NYCSD, we recommend StellaLife Products, a line of natural and chemical-free oral care solutions. Why Consider a Mouth Rinse?

While brushing and flossing remain the cornerstones of good oral hygiene, mouth rinses can offer additional benefits such as freshening breath, reducing bacteria, and soothing oral tissues. Choosing the right rinse can make a significant difference in your overall oral health.

Tips for Using Mouth Rinses

  • Consult Your Dentist: Not everyone needs a mouth rinse. Speak to your dentist about whether it’s right for you.
  • Check Ingredients: Avoid rinses with alcohol, artificial dyes, and unnecessary chemicals.
  • Follow Directions: Overusing a mouth rinse can disrupt your oral microbiome. Stick to the recommended frequency.
