The best solution for missing teeth is not the same for every person. Finding the best solution for your missing teeth is something that will require a thorough and honest evaluation from a qualified dentist. During this visit, factors unique to your situation such as the number of teeth missing, their location and function, the amount of jawbone that has collapsed since tooth loss, and the health of your remaining teeth and gums will all play a direct role in which option is best for you. Give us a call at 212-452-3344 to schedule a consultation with Dr. Tabib or De. Mello to learn which options might best serve you.
Dental implants are one of the most popular tooth replacement options. Implants are inserted into the jaw where they replace a missing tooth’s root and act as an anchor for a dental crown or another restoration. Because they are placed into the jaw, sufficient density will be required to be a good candidate for dental implants.
Dental implants are the strongest and most reliable tooth replacement option. Once accepted by the jaw they will not come loose or fall out and, with proper care, they can last for a lifetime. Implants are also the only tooth replacement option that addresses the missing root of a tooth. This makes implants the only tooth replacement option that can prevent structural changes to your jaw.
When more than one tooth is missing in an arch, a dental bridge may be a good option. Bridges can be attached to dental crowns placed over adjacent teeth or to crowns placed over implants and are ideal for holding more than one restoration in place. Bridges can be used for a single tooth as well.
Dental bridges are fixed, meaning you do not need to take them out to care for them. They are also able to restore strength, function, and beauty to smiles marred by missing teeth. However, because they do not replace all missing tooth roots, bridges will not be able to prevent changes to the jaw and will need to be adjusted as the bone narrows and shrinks over time.
When an arch or larger row of teeth is missing, dentures may work best. Our NYC cosmetic dentists offer implant-supported dentures in addition to traditional options to help ensure we are meeting the needs of all of our patients. Dentures that are supported by implants often have clip or ball-and-socket attachments, allowing them to be removed for easy cleaning. While easy to remove, implant-supported dentures are stronger and more reliable than those held in place with glue, and are better able to restore uninterrupted biting, chewing, and speaking abilities.
