Have you seen smiles that are obviously fake? Sometimes likened to Chicklets, uniformly straight, even, and ideally shaded teeth were once in high demand, but as attitudes about fashion and ideas of perfection evolve, a more natural-looking smile is the new goal – and some celebrities are even having their previous perfect smiles intentionally flawed in order to appear more natural.
Cosmetic imperfections with the smile can take on several forms. There are straight cosmetic issues such as discoloration, but also issues like crooked tooth presentation or gapped teeth that pose bite problems, as well as those that can compromise the structure of a tooth, like chipped, cracked, or broken enamel. Dental veneers have long been a popular choice for these types of problems, but the perfectly sculpted, bleached-white look they can produce is no longer the ideal.
Dental veneers are small porcelain shells that can be placed over the front of a tooth to address cosmetic and minor functional issues. Custom made for each tooth, veneers are carefully crafted to look and feel like tooth enamel and, with new trends, can now be shaded and slightly flawed to help ensure a completely seamless fit into the smile. This helps to produce a look that is more pleasing without creating a “done-up” or cosmetically altered appearance. During your initial consultation with Dr. Mello or Dr. Tabib, we can discuss natural-looking porcelain veneers in greater detail to help you determine if they are the best solution for your smile.
Dental veneers are placed over a series of visits to our Manhattan office. During your first visit, you will talk with Dr. Mello or Dr. Tabib about your concerns, we will provide a thorough evaluation, and all of your options will be discussed in full. During your second visit, we will prepare your teeth for veneers by removing a small amount of enamel. We will then make an impression of your teeth for our dental lab partners.
The master ceramists we work with will craft your veneers to our exact specifications – a process that can take two to three weeks – taking time to shade and shape them for the optimal fit. Once your veneers have been created, you will return to our office to have them placed. In most cases, veneers look and feel great right away. However, if there are adjustments that need to be made, we can make them in-office during this visit or return the veneers to have them re-crafted.
After your veneers have been placed, they are ready to serve the same role as your natural teeth. If done correctly, they will be indistinguishable from the teeth surrounding them. Cared for in the same manner as those teeth and your veneers should last for several years, continuing to look and feel like natural tooth enamel while covering more progressive cosmetic flaws.
